Two killed in Chatsworth xenophobic attacks

At this stage, the accused is receiving medical treatment and will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court soon.

A clash between locals at an informal settlement and Mozambican foreign nationals left two foreigners dead, on Sunday.

The alleged xenophobic attacks broke out at a tavern in the Lusaka Informal Settlement. According to communications officer of Chatsworth SAPS, Lt Cheryl Pillay, the 29-year-old victim was transported by paramedics to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

“It is further alleged that residents from the informal settlement assaulted the foreign nationals at their home. Two foreign nationals were transported via ambulance to a local hospital for medical treatment. Chatsworth SAPS is networking with the Department of Home Affairs and six illegal immigrants are being dealt with in terms of illegal immigration,” added Lt Pillay.

The second foreign national succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, yesterday. Another foreign national, aged 36, is under police guard in hospital.

Chatsworth SAPS is investigating two cases of murder and one case of arson. At this stage, the accused is receiving medical treatment and will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court soon.
